IITians get lessons in dressing to impress
MUMBAI: 'A grooming workshop? Well I am sure they could do with that.' Call it negative stereotyping. Although the students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) have a reputation for being India's brightest, they are rarely named amongst the country's best dressed.
But this year's Mood Indigo festival aims to change all that, with a workshop on grooming pitched at students about to undertake internships or first jobs.
1x1 polls

The workshop was conducted by a suit company, and led by Ekta Rajani who kept a three-quarters full 'audi' (auditorium) in check while marching them through the taxonomy of formal dressing.
A predominantly male audience sporting well-worn striped T-shirts, jeans and rubber sandals looked on earnestly as Rajani outlined first the rules about 'separates' (trousers, shirts, etc) and then the dos and don'ts of suits.
A few took notes; the rest, no doubt honed by years of reeling off lists of formulae, merely watched attentively as the powerpoint slides displayed different shapes of jackets (American, British and Italian), different types of shirt collars (straight, spread and buttoned-down) and the confusingly multiple variants of lapels, trouser shapes, fabrics and patterns...
...
Wearing white socks with a dark suit is the biggest crime, and cartoon character watches are a strict no no, said Rajani. There were a few guilty giggles from the 'audi'. "Ma'am can we have the slides from the presentation?" asked one eager listener.
The answer was no, but at least the question showed that India's most serious students are now beginning to take their appearance seriously too.
